If you or a family member is currently in an Assisted living community near Winston Salem they may be dealing with the feeling of loneliness.
A recent study led by Carnegie Mellon University shows that meditation reduces loneliness in older adults. The study took place over an 8-week period of time including 40 healthy adults ranging in ages from 55 to 85. Half of the participants attended weekly a meditation class for 30 minutes per day as well as attending a daylong retreat. The other half did not participate in the meditation. At the end of the 8-week period of time it showed that those who participated in the meditation showed decrease feelings of loneliness. They also found that the inflammation related gene levels were noticeably lower. This is significant because it offers a natural way of reducing a person’s risk of cancer, cardiovascular disease, and neurodegenerative diseases.
Meditation does not mean you have to sit on the floor and hum in “lotus” position. Meditation can be done anywhere whether you are sitting or walking. Prayer is also considered a form of meditation.
